10 key reasons why children won't eat their dinner
Mealtimes can be a struggle for many parents, especially when children refuse to eat their dinner. There can be many reasons why children don't want to eat, and understanding these reasons can help parents find ways to make mealtime more enjoyable for everyone.
1/ Food dislikes: Children may not like the taste or texture of certain foods, which can make them unappealing to eat.
2/ Hunger and fullness: Children may not be hungry when it's time for dinner, or may already be too full from snacking throughout the day.
3/ Distractions: Children may get easily distracted by things happening around them during mealtime, such as a television playing in the background or other family members talking at the table.
4/ Food allergies or sensitivities: Children may have trouble eating certain foods due to food allergies or sensitivities, such as a gluten or dairy intolerance.
5/ Limited food exposure: Children who haven't been exposed to a variety of foods may be more likely to be picky eaters.
6/ Emotional and behavioral issues: Children may be dealing with emotional or behavioral issues that make it difficult for them to focus on their meal, such as ADHD or anxiety.
7/ Limited appetite: Some children have naturally smaller appetite, and may not eat as much as their peers.
8/ Limited mealtime: Children may not have enough time to eat their dinner if they are rushed through meals.
9/ Too much pressure: Children may feel pressure to eat certain foods, or to finish their meal, which can make mealtime stressful and unenjoyable.
10/ Lack of parental role-modeling: Children may not be interested in eating if they see their parents not eating or not showing interest in the food.
Finally, it is important that your baby and/or toddler is comfortable in their highchair or in a dining chair. A key factor here will be if they have somewhere to place their feet. A footplate is an excellent addition to mealtime as it can extend the time your child is willing to be seated at the table, this is esepcially important if you are a family that has mealtimes together. We have a range of footrest options for both highchair and dining chairs available here
It's important to remember that every child is different, and what works for one child may not work for another. Parents should try to understand the reasons why their child is not eating, and work with them to find solutions that will make mealtime more enjoyable for everyone. Some strategies include involving children in meal planning, cooking and grocery shopping, using positive reinforcement, setting a consistent routine, and providing variety of foods.
